In Year 7 the science curriculum is delivered through an integrated unit in middle school where each class is taught by the same teacher for Science and Mathematics. This course is designed to enable to acquire scientific skills and knowledge and to develop an understanding about phenomena both within and beyond their current experiences and to relate these to other subject areas. This is extended in Year 8 with a transition to the more traditional style of science teaching. There are six topic areas covered during the year. There is a variety of assessment types ranging from a first hand investigation to research and using the latest multi-voting technology in a multiple choice task. These tasks assess knowledge recall, individual and group skills, research and literacy skills. |

During Years 9 and 10 students will further develop their depth of scientific knowledge and understanding, within the broad areas of science that encompass the traditional disciplines of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and the Earth Sciences. Students will apply their understanding to everyday life as well as develop an appreciation of science as a human activity. They will develop an appreciation of and the necessary skills in performing scientific investigations and will learn about the need to conserve, protect and maintain the environment, the use and importance of technology in advancing science and the role of science in developing technology. In the electives the Science faculty also offers students the opportunity to study Agriculture and Marine Studies. |
